Tikkun Academy

Inspired by the Hebrew phrase “Tikkun Olam,” meaning “to repair the world,” Tikkun Academy is a first-of-its-kind week long summer camp for high school students built around themes of tolerance, prejudice, and bullying. Based firmly in Holocaust education, the camp curriculum draws from programming by the National Holocaust Museum, and the National Museum of Tolerance. Students and instructors work together to identify local needs, and to create detailed action plans for concrete change in their communities. Inspiring socially active students, the program is packed with speakers, hands-on activities, and life lessons that engender empathy and education.

The Museum is thrilled to announce that Tikkun Academy will open its doors in the summer of 2012. Local schools and youth programs can nominate exceptional students from all walks of life, and each camper will conceive, create, and pitch a community-based project to a panel of local business experts. A generous donation from the Halff Foundation will enable the Museum to award a seed grant of $500 to the winning project, and will support scholarships for those in need. Confirmed speakers for the 2012 term include the CEO of Challah for Hunger, members of the San Antonio Coalition Against Genocide, and a reformed skin-head.
